UN holidays - World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Every year, on April 28, the world celebrates World Occupational Safety and Health Day. This holiday appeared not so long ago, in 1996, but has already caused massive responses from ordinary people, because the problem of injuries and deaths in the workplace is quite widespread. In fact, the idea originates much earlier. In the USA and Canada, the Day of Remembrance of Fallen Workers was held for the first time in 1989. Trade union organizations in these countries were seriously concerned that the number of victims in the workplace was inexorably growing, and decided to call the public to this problem. The statistics of victims is quite large; the International Labor Organization provides the following figures: every year more than 270 million accidents occur worldwide, of which 2-2.5 million are fatal. Dangers await people everywhere, including at work. The purpose of this event is precisely to protect workers and remind them of the safety rules that must be followed in the workplace. But not only accidents await workers at work. Stress and unscrupulous employers also cause moral harm to human health. To protect the rights of workers, every state has a Labor Code. If the boss is wrong or unnecessary, you can contact the labor inspectorate in order to restore justice. In any production there is a department that is designed to ensure the safety of its workers, therefore April 28 is considered their professional holiday. Usually all employees get together and it is the responsibility of the person responsible for safety to talk about the importance of caution in the workplace; fun quizzes on knowledge of safety rules and watching documentaries on the topic of caution and attentiveness at work. In more than a hundred countries around the world, this holiday is celebrated annually and more and more managers and ordinary workers are showing interest in the goals and directions of this event. And the goals pursued by the supporters of this event are simple, but very important: 1. Reduce the number of deaths and injuries resulting from work2. Increase the level of qualifications of those responsible for occupational safety.3. To draw public attention to this problem, so that each person, on his part, shows attentiveness and excludes negligence in relation to work.4. Solve those problems that interfere with the security of the work process. And finally, this day is celebrated in order to honor the memory of those who died at work and once again remind that caution is necessary in the process of work, as in other areas of life, because a person’s health and even life can be at stake.
