Russian Holidays - Philologist's Day

In Russia, there is a widespread tradition of celebrating holidays associated with any profession or type of activity. Along with other professional holidays, philologists also have their own. And it is celebrated more widely because the celebration falls on the day after the Day of Slavic Culture and Literature. So on May 25th Philologist's Day is celebrated. This date binds together figures of literature, linguistics, linguists, librarians, journalists, etc. Namely, those people whose professional activities are in one way or another connected with the word. Philology, through language and literature, studies the culture and history of both one specific people and world culture as a whole. Until about the 17th century, it was part of science, which combined not only verbal art, but also history, philosophy, and cultural values. Then in the 17th century it emerged as a separate science in Western Europe. In Russia, the term “philology” began to be used with the advent of the works of Lomonosov and Trediakovsky. And it became more widespread with the beginning of the publication of the journal “Philological Notes” by A. Khovansky. Until the mid-19th century, philological science was called verbal science in Russia. And only in 1850 the Faculty of Historical and Literary Sciences of St. Petersburg University was renamed the Faculty of History and Philology. It is customary to celebrate Philologist's Day in universities, schools, and library complexes. The holiday is not official, so events dedicated to the defense of dissertations, seminars and lectures are planned on this date, the topic of which is directly related to current issues in the science of philology. The most interesting and solemn celebration of this date is planned by philology students. Undoubtedly, the science of philology is worthy of celebration. After all, it is inextricably fused with the cultural values ​​of the people and carries within itself the most ancient knowledge about their immortal soul. And people who associate themselves with it deserve special respect.
