International Translation Day

September 30 is designated a holiday in honor of the patron saint of all those involved in translation - St. Jerome. He died on September 30, approximately 420 (419). The main work of his life was translating the Bible into Latin for the first time. Saint Jerome knew a large number of languages, lived for some time as a hermit in the desert, truly believed in God, and prayed a lot. For his works and exploits, the Christian Church recognized his holiness. The birth of the holiday occurred in 1991. This idea was proposed by members of the International Federation of Translators. Its members include representatives from more than 60 countries. They exchange experiences and strengthen international ties. Celebrating a professional day allows us to bring together translators all over the planet, to identify their work as important and useful for the development of culture, art, and connections in the economic and political spheres. Every year, in honor of this day, conferences and meetings of the best representatives of the Federation are held on an international scale. Small gatherings and corporate events are also held by small associations and groups united by a love of languages ​​and words in general. All events can be divided into three types: 1. Public relations - these are conferences with the participation of the press, interviews with leading specialists. 2. Great ceremony of congratulations, presentation of diplomas, international awards to the best translators. For example, a prize was awarded for the best dictionary in the Czech Republic. This award is still very useful, because it allows us to more actively exchange experiences and glossaries. 3. Activities aimed at raising the level of professionalism of translators around the world. These are trainings, master classes, training sessions. The Federation of Translators annually assigns goals and objectives for the work of its colleagues that year. For example, the motto: “Translation is a living connection between peoples” was proclaimed in 1992, and “Translation as the key to development” - in 1995. The problem of rights and responsibilities was raised, and in 2003 the motto became the topic “Rights of Translators”. International Translator's Day is still a very young holiday, but in the short time of its existence it has become an important event in the lives of all people who consider themselves to be part of this profession. There was an opportunity to feel real pride in my work and achievements in this area.
