According to experts, more than 350 million people worldwide suffer from the disease. To draw attention to the problems of these people, March 24 is celebrated as International Day against Depression.
This is interesting: Deprimo was translated from Latin as “to crush” or “to suppress,” which very accurately reflects the essence of the impact of the disease on the human psyche.
Depression was first described by Hippocrates. The ancient Greek doctor called it melancholy, causing despondency, insomnia, aversion to food, increased anxiety and irritability. The same set of symptoms, 2.5 thousand years later, is observed in modern patients of psychotherapists. Sick people suffer from low self-esteem, unmotivated feelings of guilt and slow thinking.
Important: Residents of countries where there is a lack of sunlight during most seasons of the year are most susceptible to depression. The populations of Africa and Central Asia suffer least from despondency and blues.
The main cause of mental disorder is a lack of “happiness hormones” in the body - serotonin and dopamine. The disease is caused by a lack of a healthy diet, good sleep, physical activity, and the use of certain medications. Depression, a consequence of hormonal imbalance, often occurs against the background of diseases of the endocrine and cardiovascular systems.
The disorder is also observed in 13-20% of young mothers. Postpartum depression, like any other, is measured using the Low Mood Scale. The test was developed in 1965 by American psychotherapist William Zang. For Russian conditions, the questionnaire was adapted by T.I. Balashova.
This is interesting: Creative people who have a fine mental organization are most susceptible to depression. M.Yu. suffered from prolonged hypochondria and spleen. Lermontov, N.V. Gogol, F.M. Dostoevsky, S.A. Yesenin and I.A. Brodsky. Throughout their lives, severe depression, the “black dog,” haunted W. Churchill and Princess Diana, causing melancholy and thoughts of suicide. Hollywood actors Jim Carrey, Halle Berry and Catherine Zeta-Jones suffer from it.
Every 10 inhabitants of the planet after 40 years old face various forms of mental disorders in the form of loss of strength, pessimism and loss of interest in life. Specialists from all over the world are engaged in research, diagnosis and treatment of depression. Help for patients is provided by both psychiatrists, psychotherapists and psychologists, as well as people who were able to overcome this syndrome and return to a full life.
Every year on March 24, various events are held in Russia to study the causes of the onset and improve methods of treating depression: • conferences; • seminars; • lectures; • consultations with specialists; • collecting donations for funds that help people with mental disorders (“Just People”, “ Take care of yourself" etc.)
For people with depression, support from family and friends is very important. They should not leave the person suffering from the disease alone with their problem. The participation of loved ones is one of the factors that plays an important role in getting out of a depressed state. Conversations, sincere interest and advice can help a person no less than consultations with specialists.
