World Anesthesia Day (Anesthesiologist Day)
Celebrated on 16 OctoberOn October 16, anesthesiologists celebrate their professional holiday.
The date was not chosen by chance: on October 16, 1864, a revolutionary breakthrough in medicine occurred.
In one of the Boston clinics, dentist William Thomas Green Morton removed a submandibular tumor under ether anesthesia. Morton's ideological inspirer and mentor was Charles Jackson, a physician and enthusiastic student of chemistry.
Soon the invention was patented, and millions of people had the opportunity to have their teeth treated and operated on without experiencing unbearable pain. Anesthesiology bears the title of the most merciful science.
The ancient Greek philosopher Dioscorides thought about anesthesia. In addition to philosophy, Dioscorides studied medicine and studied the properties of wild herbs. He noted and meticulously recorded the properties of some plants that reduced a person’s sensitivity to medical manipulation.
In the 20th century, a separate specialty appeared - resuscitation. Medicine was developing rapidly, and one doctor was no longer enough to perform major operations. A person was required who not only administered the exact amount of anesthesia, but also monitored the patient’s vital signs and, if necessary, could perform resuscitation procedures.
In the 21st century, different types of anesthesia are used: intravenous infusions, sprays and drops, volatile gases and gels. Throughout the operation, the anesthesiologist monitors the patient’s vital readings: heartbeat, blood pressure, saturation. He, along with the operating surgeon, is responsible for the life and health of the patient.
Anesthesiologists work in various medical fields. They are necessary in surgery, psychiatry, and narcology. Anesthesiology is secretly considered one of the most erudite specialties. A doctor must have fundamental knowledge in all major areas of medicine. For a professional, anesthesia is not a science, but an art. And, like any art, it is interesting and understandable only to those who have learned its subtleties.
The work of the anesthesiologist begins long before the operation. The doctor studies the medical history, conducts an examination, and psychologically prepares the patient for surgery. Before surgery, the patient is given an intravenous infusion, which helps to relax and relieve tension and anxiety. There are 4 types of anesthesia:• sedation;• local;• regional;• general.
During sedation, the patient is in superficial sleep, dozing. Sedation is used for invasive procedures such as colonoscopy. Local anesthesia is used for surgical interventions when it is necessary to numb a specific area of the body. Regional anesthesia blocks sensation in a specific part of the person’s torso, while the patient remains conscious. General anesthesia is accompanied by a complete loss of consciousness and sensitivity of nerve endings.
Since 1992, the Federation of Anesthesiologists and Reanimatologists has been operating in Russia. It unites 56 organizations throughout the country. The main task of the Federation is to promote the development of Russian anesthesiology and resuscitation, strengthening professional ties.
On October 16, anesthesiologists around the world gather at conferences and congresses. On this day, congratulations are accepted from: resuscitators, developers of anesthetic drugs, students and teachers of specialized universities.
