Day of the Lawyer and the First Constitution of Bulgaria
Celebrated on 16 AprilThe Constitution is the most important law of the state, because it regulates political, economic and legal life and provides citizens with their rights and freedoms.
That is why Constitution Day is considered a big holiday in all countries, and Bulgaria is no exception in this regard, which celebrates this significant event on April 16.
The first Bulgarian Constitution was adopted back in 1879. If you look at its content, it was practically the same as that of the Belgian document. Therefore, at that time, Bulgaria was a constitutional monarchy, where the parliament had fairly large and broad powers. But everything changed in 1934, when Boris the Third came to power and established his sole rule. Accordingly, this Constitution was revoked. The king concentrated all power in his hands.
The next changes to the basic law of Bulgaria took place in 1944. The 1879 Constitution was restored. Parliament regained its powers, although not for long. In connection with the advent of socialist power in Bulgaria, a new fundamental law of the state was adopted - in 1947 (the so-called “Dimitrov” Constitution), and then in 1971 (the “Zhivkov Constitution”).
Today, Bulgaria has a Constitution adopted in 1991. According to it, the country is a parliamentary republic.
In addition, April 16 is an official holiday. Various celebrations are held throughout the country on this day. The most outstanding and beloved is the ceremonial formation of the presidential regiment at the presidential palace. The President of Bulgaria necessarily congratulates his citizens on this significant event. Many cities host mass celebrations, festive concerts, and grand fireworks displays in the evening. The Bulgarians themselves take their Constitution very seriously, considering it a source of national pride.
