UN Holidays - Nelson Mandela International Day

Nelson Mandela is the first black president of South Africa. During the policy of racial discrimination, he became one of the most famous activists fighting for people's rights. It was for this that he had to spend 26 years in prison. In 1990, Mandela was released, and three years later he received the Nobel Prize. The human rights activist dedicated 67 years of his life to the cause of humanity and peace - as a fighter for human rights, a political prisoner, a global peacemaker and the first democratically elected South African president. During his tenure as president, Mandela developed many significant reforms that had the main goal of overcoming social and economic discrimination in the republic. Among the important measures of his reign are: Every year on the holiday, all sorts of events are organized at UN information centers and political organizations around the world. There are debates and readings of thematic literature, musical ethnic concerts, screenings of the film “Invictus” about the life of the South African human rights activist, photo exhibitions, etc. In addition, members of the UN join the request of the Mandela Foundation addressed to all inhabitants of the planet - in honor of the holiday, 67 minutes (one for each year of Nelson's community service) to help other people, do something meaningful and humane on this day: help those in need, babysit a child, improve the surrounding area, or take part in volunteer and charity events.
