According to the folk calendar - the Savior Not Made by Hands, the Third Savior, the Nut Savior, the Bread Savior
Celebrated on 29 AugustIn the folk calendar, the Third Savior falls on August 29, dedicated to the icon of the Image Not Made by Hands.
The celebration is also called “Nut” or “Savior on Canvas”. Usually, after the Dormition of the Mother of God, the harvest was completed, and housewives baked bread from new flour. That is why one of the names of the holiday is “Bread”.
The Savior Not Made by Hands received its name in honor of the icon of the same name with the image of Christ showing his face on ubrus (canvas) and a clay board. The tradition of this performance was formed on the basis of the legend about the image not made by hands, which was imprinted on a towel after Jesus wiped his face with it.
According to church tradition, the artist could not transfer the face of Jesus to the canvas because of the bright divine radiance that emanated from him. Noticing the painter, Christ asked him for water and a handkerchief. After he wiped his face with a cloth, his face was imprinted on it.
The main treasure of the city, the famous canvas with the face of Christ, was kept in Edessa until Emperor Constantine VII bought it. The famous painting was transferred to Constantinople, which marked the beginning of the celebration of the Savior Not Made by Hands.
