Holidays 18 august
Geography as a science appeared more than 2,000 years ago in Ancient Greece. Domestic scientists studying our planet, the processes occurring on its surface and inside the Earth, celebrate their professional holiday on August 18. On this day in 1845, the royal decree establishing the Russian Geographical Society was signed. At the origins of the organization are world-famous scientists, politicians, travelers, philanthropists and simple devotees. For the first time, Geographer's Day was celebrated in Russia on August 18, 2020. Since that time, the holiday, aimed at popularizing Earth science, has become an annual celebration. With a joke for life: If you are lost in the forest and don’t have a compass or navigator, don’t be sad! Wait until autumn - the birds will fly south. The traditions of celebrating Geographer's Day have not yet been established. On August 18, various events are held - lectures, conferences, intellectual quizzes and film screenings of documentaries. On this day, the names of great people are remembered, thanks to whose initiative the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) was founded: I.F. Krusenstern, N.M. Przhevalsky, F.P. Wrangel, N.N. Miklouho-Maclay, V.I. Dalia, P.P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky and many others. On August 18, open days are held at universities that train geographers, surveyors and cartographers. With a joke for life: Did you know that the territory of the Krasnoyarsk Territory could easily accommodate four Frances and seven Germanys? But they don’t want to, you bastards! The headquarters of the company is located in Moscow. Its branches are located in many countries of the world - Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, Macedonia and Transnistria, Tunisia and India. International branches of the Russian Geographical Society are registered on a virtual map, taking part in the “Night of Geography” event and other events held in honor of the holiday. With a joke for life: Teacher: “I hate to say this, but your son is very weak in geography.” Parents: “It doesn’t matter - with our income you won’t go far...” It is no coincidence that Geographer's Day was celebrated for the first time in 2020 - on the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Russian Geographical Society on the basis of the decree of Nicholas I. The Society was engaged in a comprehensive study of the Fatherland and adjacent territories, the development of the World Ocean, and the preparation of expeditions to discover new lands. The organization did not stop its activities even during the Great Patriotic War, rescuing unique scientific collections and collections, creating topographic maps, and clarifying the relief data of the areas where the battles took place. The Russian Society, along with the Prague, London and Berlin, is one of the four oldest geographical organizations in the world. With a joke for life: A geography teacher comes to see a therapist. "Tell me exactly where your pain is concentrated?" - asks the doctor. “A leg,” answers the geographer. "Where exactly?" - the therapist is interested. "Northeast of the heel." Geography includes a whole range of disciplines - climatology, geoscience, geomorphology, oceanology, cartography, etc. The field of study of this science includes natural resources, energy sources, economic factors in the development of regions and countries. The profession is relevant not only for studying the surface and interior of the Earth. Scientific research is used to plan measures to preserve the environment and renew natural resources. The importance of the activities of surveyors, cartographers, land reclamation workers, meteorologists and workers in other specialties is undeniable. That’s why they are congratulated on August 18 on Geographer’s Day in Russia.
There are situations in life when it seems that all the work and effort put into achieving a goal was in vain. A person who is self-confident and has an inner core does not give in under the pressure of circumstances and does not give up on assigned tasks. People who understand that the problems that arise only strengthen their character and make them stronger are distinguished by endurance and patience. August 18 is a holiday established in honor of those who persistently pursue their goals - Never Give Up Day. Never Give Up Day is celebrated by strong-willed people who believe in their dreams and want to achieve great heights. This could be career growth and sporting achievements, the release of a designer collection, or organizing an exhibition of your own paintings. An ancient Chinese proverb says: “Either don’t start, or once you start, don’t give up.” What qualities do you need to develop in yourself so that you are not tempted to give up in the face of difficulties? Purposeful people who have achieved heights in their business recommend:• look at life with optimism;• do not be afraid to gain even negative experiences;• focus on your strengths;• remember the happy moments of life on the way to success. By following these tips, you and Before you know it, you will become an example for those who dream of reaching the top, but do not believe in their own strength. L.N. Tolstoy believed that achieving peace and comfort is associated with the loss of everything that is beautiful in a person. The writer was convinced that difficulties build character, so not only should you not be afraid of them, but sometimes even cause them by taking the fire upon yourself. L.N. Tolstoy owns the words: “To live honestly, you have to rush, get confused, fight, make mistakes, start and give up, and start again, and give up again, and always struggle and lose. And calmness is spiritual meanness.” It’s hard to disagree with the great Russian prose writer. A. Lincoln, A. Einstein, T. Edison, S. Stallone, D. Trump, M. Jordan and other successful people thank the difficulties that arose in their life, because without them they would not have achieved what they wanted. Overcoming obstacles causes a surge of adrenaline, gives invaluable experience and self-confidence. An example of someone else's success inspires and inspires. And the saying that difficult times give birth to strong people gives you faith and awareness of your own uniqueness. Sometimes it seems that failures and the tests sent are impossible to withstand and pass with dignity. In this case, many people are helped by turning to the religious foundations of life. Believers are confident that God will not allow anything to happen to you that you cannot bear. A person is sent as many tests as he can withstand. According to the teachings of Buddha, life is suffering. There are always difficulties and difficulties in it, which is considered the norm. The purpose of existence is to end suffering and achieve nirvana. Enlightenment is the goal of every Buddhist's life. There are many obstacles on the way to it, but if you follow the advice of the 14th Dalai Lama, a person will be able to overcome them. The spiritual leader addresses every follower of Tibetan Buddhism with the words: "Never give up. No matter what happens. Never give up." Never Give Up Day calls on people of all faiths, any social status, profession, age and gender to do the same.
Common Language Day is celebrated annually on August 18th. It was created in order to draw public attention to the issue of the relevance of introducing uniform, generally accepted norms of international communication. Linguistic diversity is a natural result of the development of a large number of societies. But speaking different languages it is impossible to agree. The ideal option seems to be the creation of a common language for all peoples, understandable to the population of any country. But this, at this stage, is a utopia. Therefore, several approaches have been developed to solve the problem: 1. Maximum distribution of one of the existing languages. This is exactly what the leading powers at that time did in the 20th century, but not a single one succeeded completely. As a result, in the modern world, according to different classifications, there are from 7 to 10 languages of international communication. They are recognized as those that can be used to communicate with a large number of people around the world. These include Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French, Spanish, and English. 2. Creation of the artificial language Esperanto. It was developed in 1887 by Polish linguist Lazar Markowicz. It is based on the lexical and grammatical norms of Western European languages, and is considered quite easy to master for a resident of any country in the world. 3. Use of modern technologies that allow you to quickly translate speech. This is a promising direction. Today, such a translation contains a lot of inaccuracies, but the improvement of existing programs and the creation of new ones allows us to be optimistic about the method. In addition to the above, international languages include program code encoding, Morse code and sign language used by the deaf. Common Language Day is generally recognized, one way or another, celebrated all over the world. Linguistic conferences are scheduled for August 18, as well as activist actions at which they propose the language of their country as an international one. There are thematic programs on television. And ordinary citizens can share with their loved ones their thoughts about promising methods of communication or tell them the following interesting facts: • The most widely spoken language on the planet is Mandarin Chinese. For this reason, it is considered very promising for study. • Russian and Bengali are recognized as the most complex languages in terms of grammar and morphology. • Russian is spoken by more than 280 million people around the world. This is almost twice the population of Russia. • Basque is considered the oldest European language. He is the only representative of his linguistic group, that is, he does not have any dialects. • Some languages involve more than just sounds made with the mouth. These include Pashto and Swahili. To say some words on them, you will have to tap your knuckles or specifically click your teeth. There is another approach to celebrating Common Language Day. Its supporters urge everyone to “find common ground” in a figurative sense, not literally. After all, the expression “they speak different languages” means a different semantic load of the dialogue. That is, you need to look at the problem from the interlocutor’s point of view, hear someone else’s point of view and strive for a mutually beneficial solution or a reasonable compromise. In a global sense, this can lead to solving existing world problems and military conflicts, improving the level and quality of life of people throughout our planet. At the local level, it will help regulate relationships between children and parents, spouses, and colleagues.
Insight, intuition and clairvoyance are a consequence of fine-tuning a person’s subconscious to connect with the outside world. Academician V.I. Vernadsky in his works following K.E. Tsiolkovsky substantiated the concept of the living Universe and developed the theory of the information field. The scientist called it the noosphere, which is the product of thoughts, emotions and actions of people. Information about everything that was or is happening in the present time is contained at any point in space and is available to each of us. Thanks to the noosphere and attunement to the frequencies of planetary consciousness, it is possible to predict the future. August 18th is Serendipity Day. There are a lot of scientifically inexplicable cases when a mother, located thousands of kilometers from her child, realizes that he is in trouble. Many people know the outcome of an event in advance, and if their minds do not suppress intuition, they benefit from this foresight. The bonus of such insight is making the right decision, choosing the most favorable moment for action, and even life. An example is the change of plans of 14 lucky people, many of whom were led to abandon sailing on the Titanic by intuition. The believers, whom the church elevated to the rank of saints, possessed perspicacity and the talent of clairvoyance. The seers were Procopius of Ustyug, the wonderworker Basil the Blessed, Xenia of Petersburg and Matrona of Moscow. The Church believes that God endowed the saints with the gift of foresight for sincere faith, inner perfection and moral purity. Modern esotericists partially agree with this statement, believing that only spiritually developed people can connect to the Earth’s information field, which is also called the Akashic Chronicles. In honor of Serendipity Day, famous mediums and prophets who possessed the talent of clairvoyance are remembered. These include M. Nostradamus, H. Duncan, D. Hume and E.P. Blavatsky. In the post-Soviet space, the predictions of the Bulgarian clairvoyant Vanga, who died more than 25 years ago, are still very popular. Many of her prophecies concerning specific individuals and entire nations continue to come true. Speaking about famous clairvoyants, we also remember the American Edgar Cayce, who predicted both the fates of thousands of people and events on a planetary scale from the invention of the laser to the collapse of the USSR. Every person is endowed with the gift of intuition and the talent of insight. But often “mind games” prevent you from listening to your inner instincts. The brain produces information based on our preferences, preventing us from perceiving reality objectively. To develop foresight, you need to learn to trust your intuition, which will always give a signal if something is going wrong and not in a person’s interests. Serendipity Day encourages people to start listening to their inner voice. Developed intuition increases confidence and teaches you to trust yourself. Over time, a person begins to decipher the signs of fate and act as efficiently as possible according to the law of entropy, according to which everything complex tends to simplify and conserve energy. The initiators of Serendipity Day are confident that it is never too late to start developing the talent of foresight. And then creative inspiration, unexpected moments of insight, prophetic dreams and other signs of intuition will become your faithful companions for the rest of your life.
The study of the planet's interior, water and atmosphere made it possible to discover 118 chemical elements. One of them was first discovered on the Sun, and only then on Earth. It became helium - a monatomic inert non-toxic gas with a low melting point. On August 18, 1868, French astronomer Pierre Jansen discovered in the spectrum of light from the Sun not only lines of hydrogen, but also another yellow substance. It turned out to be a new chemical element, which was named helios (in translation from Greek - “Sun”). In honor of this significant event, August 18 is celebrated as Helium Discovery Day. Helium Discovery Day celebrates the second most abundant element in the Universe. Helium accounts for 23% of all cosmic mass. It was discovered in the Earth's atmosphere at the beginning of the twentieth century. Helium is quite rare on our planet, because... found mainly in radioactive ores, formed as a result of the decay of atomic nuclei. Thanks to astronomers, a new era in the development of astrophysics began. Now people, being on Earth and analyzing the spectrum of light from planets, can determine the chemical composition of stars and gas, calculate their temperature and density. At the same time as P. Jansen, the English astronomer Norman Lockyer also observed the prominences of the Sun. He, like his colleague from France, submitted a letter to the Academy of Sciences about the discovery of a new line in the corona of the luminary. Both astronomers addressed the scientific council on October 24, 1868, but Lockyer’s appeal came 4 hours earlier than Jansen’s. Both letters were read out at a meeting of the Academy of Sciences. Helium was recognized as a new chemical element, and in honor of the event, a medal was minted with portraits of two astronomers entwined with laurel branches - a symbol of victory and glory. Physicists managed to obtain liquid helium in laboratory conditions only in 1906, and 20 years later - to achieve its crystallization. The Russian scientist P.L. contributed to the study of the properties of the new chemical element. Kapitsa. In 1938, the physicist discovered such a property of helium as superfluidity in the liquid state. The gas was first used in 1915 to fill airship cylinders that the Germans used to bomb London in World War I. Today, helium is used to fill the shells of meteorite probes and balloons, as a coolant for obtaining low temperatures, an indicator in the study of faults in the earth's crust, and a preservative in the food industry. The gas is used to treat asthma and suffocation, and to prevent decompression sickness, which often occurs in divers. The use of artificial air, in which nitrogen is replaced by helium, made it possible to increase the time scuba divers spent under water and the depth of descent to 100 meters or more. The holiday, celebrated annually on August 18, pays tribute to the talent of astronomers and physicists who discovered gas beyond the planet and were able to describe its properties. Helium Discovery Day reminds people of the beneficial properties of helium and the importance of its discovery back in 1868.

Evstignei Zhitnik is a summer holiday celebrated by believers on August 18. On this day, Orthodox Christians pay tribute to the memory of Saint Eustigney, a faithful and courageous warrior who became a saint, a Roman by birth. It is known that Evstigney devoted no more or less to military service - as much as 60 years. According to a long-standing legend, while still serving in the army, Evstigney had the opportunity to observe various miracles testifying to the power and strength of the Lord. For example, one day he saw a shining Cross in the sky, promising him victory in battles and a long life. After completing his military service, Eustignaeus went to Antioch, where he began the life of a righteous man. The future saint regularly visited the temple, devoted a lot of time to prayer and strictly observed all fasts. In other words, he led a calm, measured and pious life, in full accordance with all Christian dogmas. The idyll ended when Julian the Apostate seized power in the empire, intending to return the Romans to paganism. Eustignaeus by that time was already an ancient old man at the age of 110, with gray hair. He was soon arrested by order of the new emperor, then tried, calling on him to publicly renounce his faith. Evstigney, being firm in his own convictions, did not renounce his faith and was not afraid to directly declare to the king’s eyes what he thought about his apostasy from Christ. After listening to the daring speeches of the righteous elder, the emperor gave the order to execute him. So Evstigney accepted martyrdom for the Christian faith, and over time was canonized. Many folk traditions are associated with the holiday of Evstigney Zhitnik. It was celebrated at the end of summer, when peasants massively harvest crops from their fields. It was generally accepted that one should work silently on this day, without being distracted by empty conversations, without fussing or quarreling with other people. If you break this unwritten rule, then in winter the cattle will definitely be attacked by illness. Some special rituals were also used to provide protection from evil spirits that could harm cows, sheep and other livestock. It was necessary to ask for help and support from Mother Damp Earth, casting special spells “on all four sides” of the pasture. To do this, the oldest residents of the village got up at dawn, went to the field at first dawn, then turned their faces to the east and uttered special words addressed to nature itself. They contained a request for protection from an unclean reptile, a dashing deed and an evil love spell. And on this day in Rus' it was customary to glorify zhito (barley), hence the name of the holiday - Evstignei Zhitnik. It was supposed to knead the dough for barley bread in the morning, always using the first grind of wheat. It was believed that if you tasted such bread, you would live in abundance, satiety and warmth all year. People also believed many signs associated with the holiday of Evstigney Zhitnik:
Orthodox holidays on August 18:
Every year on August 18, the pre-feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord is celebrated. Forefeast in Orthodoxy is the day that precedes major Orthodox holidays. Designed to prepare for the celebration. During it, prayers are read that are dedicated to the subsequent holiday. The Transfiguration of the Lord is a holiday that is included in the Orthodox Church in the twelve, that is, the 12 most important. This is the day when Christ allowed three of his disciples, namely the apostles Peter, James and John, to see the Kingdom of God on earth. On Mount Tabor they saw the Uncreated Divine Light (later it received the name “Tabor Light”). Having experienced unknown happiness and spiritual joy. The description of these events is found in the Gospels of Mark, Luke and Matthew. They are very similar to each other. They climbed the mountain with the Son of God to pray to the Heavenly Father, and while they prayed, the face of Christ brightened like the sun, and the whiteness of his clothes became like snow. They were so impressed by what they saw that Peter even offered to stay on the mountain. But then they were surrounded by a cloud, being in which they heard the voice of God, who said that Christ was his son and they needed to listen to him. The vision ended, and the disciples were instructed not to mention these events until His Resurrection occurred from the dead. They began to celebrate this event in the fourth century. This is due to the fact that at that time a temple was built on Mount Tabor by Queen Helen, Equal to the Apostles. On the day of Transfiguration, according to church charter, earthly fruits are illuminated to commemorate the new harvest at the end of the Liturgy (apples, grapes and other fruits and vegetables), and after they are donated to the poor and to the temple. Apple Spas is the popular name given to this holiday. What is connected with lighting of fruits and vegetables. On this day, believers are allowed to taste the fruits of the new harvest for the first time. After the beginning of Peter's Lent and until the beginning of the holiday, this was prohibited. According to the gospel, the events took place 40 days before Easter, which takes place in the spring. The postponement of the celebration to the summer is explained by fasting. In order not to distract Christians from it, it was moved to summer time. This is typical for the east. Similar events have already occurred before. On the day of baptism, when the Holy Spirit descended, everyone who was present heard the voice of the Father. In Jesus Christ He recognized His Son. And during the Transfiguration he calls to listen to the teaching. This event shows the unity of two natures - human and Divine. Disputes about this continued unabated for many centuries among Christian theologians. The Holy Fathers interpreted this as a sign of the future transformation of all people into the Kingdom of Heaven.
